Man sets dog on fire, causes shutdown of Courtney Campbell Causeway

A man was accused of setting his dog on fire and causing a crash that shut down the Courtney Campbell Causeway on Sunday.

Tampa police were called to the 700 block of W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. after bystanders reported a man setting a fire in a parking lot.

Officers found a dead dog after putting out the flames. The suspect, identified as Jason Larson, 43, left the area before police arrived.

Larson was located about 30 minutes later, standing on a ledge along the causeway. Police also found an empty car that had crashed.

Larson stated that he killed his dog, was armed and wanted to hurt himself, according to police. The causeway was shut down in both directions at 8:20 p.m. as officers negotiated with Larson.

He was taken into custody about two hours later and charged with animal cruelty. Officers reported that Larson did not have a weapon.

The causeway reopened at 11:43 p.m.
